Counterperson Jobs
Counterpersons are literally stationed at the counters of food joints. They primarily serve food, beverages, or desserts to customers in such settings as take-out counters of restaurants or lunchrooms, business or industrial establishments, hotel rooms, and cars.
Counterpersons perform many tasks which include (may include): scrubbing and polishing counters, steam tables, and other equipment; replenishing foods at serving stations; taking customers' orders and writing ordered items on tickets, giving ticket stubs to customers; preparing food such as sandwiches, salads, and ice cream dishes, using standard formulas or following directions; delivering orders to kitchens, and picking up and serve food when it is ready; adding relishes and garnishes to food orders, according to instructions; setting up dining areas for meals and clear them following meals; brewing coffee and tea, and filling containers with requested beverages; and arranging reservations for patrons of dining establishments.
Counterpersons may also: prepare bills for food, using cash registers, calculators, or adding machines; balance receipts and payments in cash registers; and accept payment and make change.
Counterpersons need to be good at: customer and personal service – customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; food production – knowing the techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products for consumption, including storage/handling techniques; and Mathematics.
Additionally, counterpersons are required to be good at: active listening; reading and oral comprehension; social perceptiveness; speech recognition; speech clarity; oral expression; information ordering; and deductive reasoning.
