Cooking is a highly responsible profession. Becoming a highly successful cook requires: a deep interest in cooking and the ability to cook; determination; artistic flair; energy; natural authority; a strong sense of responsibility; self-control; no mental or drug or alcohol related aberrations; good organizational skills; a refined palate; and adaptability.
Cooks perform a wide array of tasks which include: cleaning food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils; cooking and packaging batches of food; cooking the exact number of items ordered by each customer, working on several different orders simultaneously; maintaining sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas; measuring ingredients required for specific food items being prepared; mixing ingredients; operating large-volume cooking equipment such as grills, deep-fat fryers, or griddles; pre-cooking items in order to prepare them for later use; preparing and serving beverages; preparing specialty foods such as pizzas, fish and chips, sandwiches, and tacos, following specific methods that usually require short preparation time; reading food order slips or receiving verbal instructions as to food required by patron, and preparing and cooking food according to instructions; verifying that prepared food meets requirements for quality and quantity; washing, cutting, and preparing foods designated for cooking; cleaning, stocking, and restocking workstations and display cases; ordering and taking delivery of supplies; preparing dough; following recipe; scheduling activities and equipment use with managers, using information about daily menus to help coordinate cooking times; serving orders to customers at windows, counters, or tables; and taking food and drink orders and receiving payment from customers.
