Job Title: Food Safety Manager
Job Location: Scarborough, ME
Manage all retail support in the area of food safety/quality compliance by directing food safety specialist responsible for: sanitation audits, pest control, food safety training, and official regulatory liaison.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities (essential functions)
•Manage all aspects of food safety programs within Hannaford banner and assigned field territory including but not limited to leading long-term food safety and regulatory compliance initiatives, analysis of prevention, food safety metrics, interpretation of regulatory standards and legislation and identification of industry trends and best practices.
•Directly manage, direct and support company Food Safety Specialist and vendor related support team for all areas impacting food safety. Serve as ‘lead’ food safety expert within the Hannaford banner and primary liaison to DA Director of Food Safety.
•Routinely interact and work in conjunction with DA food safety colleague towards defining common food safety programs while offering unique banner solutions, as needed. Serve as the ‘food safety voice’ for assigned banner(s).
•Supervise food safety training for store managers, department managers and all support areas. Conduct food safety training for district managers. Conduct food safety training sessions and proctor certification examinations.
•Supervise store food safety/sanitation audits. Conduct in depth review of food safety and sanitation procedures compliance.
•Act as the liaison between Health department and department of agriculture. Develop contacts and relations with officials responsible for food regulation enforcement.
•Monitor sanitation and pest control vendor activities. Work with the local pest control and sanitation vendors to ensure compliance with contractual arrangements and directs them as needed.
•Conduct on-going problem-solving based on an objective assessment of the facts or circumstances while using collaborative work methods to achieve consensus. Advise leadership and business partners (retail and corporate support) regarding food safety and sanitation issues within their respective regions and areas of responsibility.
•Assist distribution center operations with food safety, sanitation and pest control support.
•Assist, as needed, in other regulatory compliance issues such as Country of Origin Labeling, WIC, weight and measure standards, Nutritional labeling, etc.
•Provide field support for corporate food safety initiatives.
•Provide food safety field support and direction for emergency/crisis situations (power outages, fires, floods, claimed illnesses, recall audits, etc.).
•Five to eight years’ experience in managing food safety or quality assurance related work including training and auditing.
•Three to five years’ experience with retail operations.
•Expert knowledge of the FDA Food Code.
•Valid driver’s license.
•Bachelor’s degree in a life science (food science, biology, microbiology, zoology) or public health field
•Master’s in Public Health or food science
•A self-starter with solid interpersonal skills.
•Must be able to communicate effectively and present training programs.
•Basic computer skills to operate MS Word, Excel. PowerPoint and e-mail.
•Ability to determine ‘root cause’ and appropriate analysis.
•Ability to manage others.
•Must be results oriented, have ability to develop self and others
•Ability to influence without authority.
•Proven ability to excel in a team environment
