Food Service Manager
To provide leadership using policies, procedures and available systems to support the Harbor Light Center in meeting the mission of The Salvation Army
The backgrounds of the clients served by The Harbor Light Program will manifest a variety of inappropriate behaviors. When this occurs, employees are to respond within the context of the treatment environment of the site. Employee conduct (actions, dress, etc) and interactions (conversations, written communications, etc.) with clients must also be within the treatment environment of the facility.
The Food Service Manager of The Harbor Light Center has the primary responsibility for overseeing and participating in all food preparation in the kitchen and ensuring that all cooking meets health and licensing standards. This position must work well with a diverse population. Support of the mission of The Salvation Army is critical.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A strategy exists to ensure:
All departmental services are operated in a manner consistent with the purpose, goals and mission of The Salvation Army.
Training, orientation, and ongoing supervision is provided, including scheduling and evaluation of all Food Service staff.
Kitchen is properly staffed in accordance with city, and departmental regulations.
All volunteers assigned to the Food Service Department are appropriately supervised.
Menu plans and recipes are developed for in house and mobile feeding programs that are both nutritious and cost effective.
All necessary records, statistics, and documentation needed are appropriately maintained.
Food and supplies are ordered from providers and the Chicago Food Depository according to departmental procedures.
Food storage areas are properly maintained to meet all health and sanitation requirements.
Inventory is properly maintained and accounted for.
All dietary requirements are met in accordance with dietician’s standards.
Food needs are provided for special events as coordinated with the Director of Operations.
Support is provided to the Harbor Light facility as assigned.
All other duties as assigned.

High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Must have three years food service management experience.
Must have at least one year cooking and menu planning experience.
A current City of Chicago Food Service/Sanitation Certificate.
This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.
This position reports to the Director of Operations.
This position supervises the assistant kitchen managers and all kitchen staff.
This individual relates to, and interacts with, a wide range of contacts both within
and outside the Salvation Army. In these contacts, they act as a representative of the
Army and its mission.
This individual will not commit Army resources that have not been allocated or approved.
This individual will not fail to keep the Director of Operations informed on all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility.
This individual will not fail to adhere to all Army policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is required to do light physical work. In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time; use hands and fingers; communicate; move; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in using standard kitchen equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to focus. Must be able to walk up two flights of stairs and lift up to 50 lbs. The work environment for this position includes a kitchen environment with a low to high noise level. Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.
