The restaurant industry is alive and thriving, despite the current economic climate. And one section that will always have positions waiting to be filled with competent people is restaurant management. Being a good restaurant leader is something that takes some effort but can be very rewarding. The key to becoming a good leader boils down to three main attributes; perseverance, tolerance and a positive attitude.

Perseverance is defined as the ability to keep trying your hardest in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. Simply put, it means that, as a leader, it is your job to be steady; to be the one that your employees look to when the job gets challenging. Despite what may be going on in your life outside the restaurant, you have to check your problems at the door, put your game face on and be the one in charge. It sounds simple but a goodly number of leaders, both in the restaurant industry and not, fail at this very endeavor.

Tolerance is another key factor to being a good leader. You have to be open and accepting of other people, regardless of their religion, race, sex or personal practices and have the ability to maintain a fair and objective attitude in regards to them and all your other workers. You also have to be very aware of what you say and do as to not offend anyone in your workplace, even by accident.

Finally, maintaining a positive attitude is our final key to showing yourself as a good leader. No matter what’s going wrong in a shift, you have to remain upbeat and positive with your crew. Due to your ability to persevere, the restaurant staff will be following your example. If you walk into the dining room with a scowl, not only will your employees pick up on that but they may begin to question themselves and their performance.
